8th Grade Homeroom Assignments

Hello and welcome to the 8th Grade Homeroom Page.  Here you will see class announcements and FYIs.

 

Week of 9.17:  We have had a success week of MAP testing.  Students took their Math MAP on Tuesday and I know that they were proud of their scores.  We took the Reading test today and I am excited to see the results. Next Tuesday, we will take our final MAP test in ELA.  In between MAP testing, we have worked on making quality annotations, our vocabulary, and reading the exposition of Tom Sawyer and discussing how Twain develops Tom as a likeable character. 

 

Don't forget that students have their Vocabulary due on Friday.  They have had all week and time in class to work on this.  We are on Unit 1. 

 

Next week, I will assign a paper comparing and contrasting 2 protagonists with some combination of ELA and Literature.  This was the paper that I mentioned to the class this week, but was not able to start due to MAP testing timing.  We will also have a short comprehension quiz to assess how well students are understanding what we have been reading and how to choose the best text evidence to support a claim. 

 

We will also start the novel, Refugee by Alan Gratz next week which is great first novel.  Students will be working on reading closely and gathering text evidence.  It is a larger book so students should expect to be reading at home as well as at school.

Week of 9.7: Stay tuned for information on a high school application information night.  We will be discussing 9/11 on Friday.  

 

Week of 8.31:   This week we are focusing on routines and organization to prepare us for a successful 8th grade year.   I will collect summer work packets through Thursday.  They are optional, but students will get a prize for completing them. 

      Students have organized their binders and put dates in their planners. They also have a monthly and yearly calendar.   I have encouraged them to write down practice days and times for sports and activities on their calendars and planners to help them look ahead and use their time wisely.  I would like to encourage families to make a monthly or trimester supply check of their student's binders to help clean out old papers and ensure that they always have good pencils and paper.  This is a great time to put it in your to-do list now.

      Wednesday, 9/2 will be a free dress day.  There is no school on Friday, 9/3 or Monday 9/7.

There are two separate forms on that link. The Confidential Teacher Evaluation Form is filled out by myself and the other 8th grade teachers and sent to the high schools they are applying to. Please turn this form into me.

 

The Transfer Request Form is filled out by the office and principal.  Please turn this into the office.

 

These MUST be turned in for a complete high school application. We make copies and turn them into the schools for you once we have completed them. Please make sure to fill out the parts that you must fill out (it will say "to be completed by the applicant") These take us a great amount of time to fill out, so I ask that these get turned in by the end of November so that we (the staff) may work on them and get them turned into the high schools before Christmas break.
