This week we will be skipping ahead to Chapter 19: Spreading the Gospel.
Chapter 19 focuses on the New Testament Epistles and what they teach us about Christian morality. While these epistles, or letters, were addressed to specific communities within the early church, these seven epistles continue to guide the universal Church today.
These epistles tell us that love is the foundation for living a Christian life. Without love, our good actions do not have the meaning Christ intended them to have. As disciples of Christ we have a moral obligation to serve others as Jesus taught us. But as we imitate Jesus by serving others, we must remember to also love others and to treat them with kindness, justice, compassion, and mercy.
1 Corinthians 13: 1-13 gives us an example of true Christian love and forms a basis for Christian morality. And living a life of Christian love begins with the way we treat those closest to us, especially our family. The Christian family is called the domestic Church. It is in our homes and within our families that we, hopefully, first experience God's love and hear the Gospel message.
To live in love means that we promote the dignity and equality of all people, in our family and in society. We work to encourage others to lead moral lives while we strive to also be good citizens.
Spend time today and tomorrow reading pages 287-291. After you finish your reading write a short reflection containing 2 things you learned AND 2 ways you can spread the Gospel message. Please submit your reflections by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. Let me know if you have any questions or need help. Thank you!
