Quiz Friday!
Due:
QUIZ Next Week, Two Explorations, Catch-Up on ALL Missing Explorations
You have three assignments that will be due on Tuesday at 9:00am. The first, and most important, is as follows: Here is your Big Assignment for today. Before Tuesday you must complete any/all explorations that you are currently missing or I will not take them for credit. Again, any explorations not completed by Tuesday (including the ones I just assigned you above) will not be taken for credit.
Your second and third assignments involve the Explorations 1 and 2 in the “Speciation and Extinction” Lesson (straightforward sections). Now that we have taken a look at Natural Selection and the origin of life, we will now look at how individual species continue to be impacted by both nature and genetics. I will be spending a large amount of our Zoom time tomorrow discussing our current lessons, but be ready with any questions you might have. You do not need to complete any of the “hands-on” portions.
Due:
Virtual Lab, Natural Selection Explorations
To begin, please complete the Virtual Lab that I have tasked you with that covers the various similarities in species that we can readily observe (this circles back to our understanding of common ancestry that we left off with last week). Please work through this carefully and pay close attention to the specific examples.
Next, you have two “Natural Selection” activities that I want you to complete through HMH. There is a Hands-On lab part, but this is the definition of weak sauce so I want you to skip it. (Note: I did skip over one of the lessons, but it is not essential for you to complete the exercises I tasked you with.) Natural selection is an incredibly interesting (and wildly subjective) section that essentially explains how stronger, more well-adapted organisms survive and pass those traits on to future generations while weaker organisms do not (we’ll talk about the science behind this on Friday). On Friday we have an important Zoom Class that will entail a presentation I want to share with you (one of my Favorites, and I can’t wait to go over it with you).
In total you have three tasks you must complete, but you must also ensure that you have no missing HMH explorations (some of you mentioned in your MS Teams response last week that you were missing one or two but that you would submit those as soon as humanly possible. Time’s almost up!).
Due:
MS Teams Quiz, Evidence of Common Ancestry
Your first assignment is to complete the quick quiz on MS Teams Quiz (“Trimester 3 Check-In Quiz”). This will take you about two minutes to complete and there is nothing you need to prepare for (easiest quiz ever!). You Must take this quiz before you move onto the next assignments listed below.
Your second and third assignments are from HMH and involve our “Evidence of Common Ancestry” lesson. I know you’ve heard this before, but this is a really, Really interesting section. You are going to look at homologous structures (more on this during our zoom) as well as patterns and areas of commonality in development. You will need to have both of these explorations completed by Tuesday at 9:00am.
Due:
Patterns in Changes of Life on Earth
8th: HMH activities in the “Patterns of Life on Earth” Lesson. This is an Excellent lesson with only two explorations, so I want to complete this prior to our common ancestry section (very interesting, higher-level topic).
Prior to Thursday, please be sure to complete both of the tasked HMH activities. There is a “Hands-On Lab” section that I DO want you to do! You should Not have to cut anything out as all you need to do is sketch your evidence. In order to be successful during this investigation, it is paramount that you remember that the farther you go down in the crust, the older you will go; therefore, a fossil/rock found at the surface of Earth’s crust will be more (generally much more) recent than a fossil/rock found deeper. Think about not cleaning your room for a year… the items on the top of all of your things on the floor will be more recent than the items at the bottom of the pile.
Due:
New Module Explorations 1 and 2 - The Fossil Record
8th: Please remember our Zoom meeting tomorrow at 10:00; I will be reviewing our new module which is our Life Science module for 8th grade. We will get through as much as realistically possible of this module as we can because it has some incredible topics contained within it.

Your two assignments that will be due on Tuesday: Complete both Exploration 1 and 2 of our new lesson: The Fossil Record (omit the hands-on labs as you won’t have the materials at home more than likely). I think you are going to love this new module as it is incredibly interesting and well designed. Read the text carefully before answering the questions and you will be just fine! As always, please email me with Any questions as I am always available to all of you.
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! Live your dreams,
Mr. Langston

Today you will be completing Exploration 2 on magnetic properties. I LOVE this section because magnetic domains are really, really interesting. Magnets have a limited lifespan, as you will start to see in this section. Some materials (iron, nickel, and cobalt) are naturally occurring elements/metals that have magnetic properties.
Your exploration will be due Friday, March 27th.

7th: Please email me pictures of your lab if you have not already done so (two pictures should be sufficient) in addition to having submitted your lab responses. Remember that tomorrow, Tuesday the 24th you will have a quiz over the three explorations you have completed so far. Be sure to study! Your only assignment Tuesday will be your quiz, so you can submit today’s assignment on Thursday at 9:00am.
Now, for your assignment: Please begin by watching my YouTube video at the following link: https://youtu.be/RFOoeKusxlk

Assignment
Howdy Folks,
I hope that all is well! Again, nice job keeping up with your assignments! I am so impressed with your self-advocacy and responsibility taking! I love you guys and I miss you. Please make sure you’re not driving your parents crazy while you’re stuck at home :)
March 19th Assignments:
6th Grade: BEAUTIFUL job with attendance! You guys rock!
Tomorrow, 3/19, you will be completing the Potential and Kinetic Energy section “Lesson Self Check” in HMH. Specifically, you will be completing three sections: "Can You Explain it?," "Interactive Review," and "Checkpoints.” You do Not have to complete the “Make Your Own Study Guide” section. Pay close attention to the points taught in the Self Check as this is an excellent review/recap of what we have covered regarding PE/KE. This will be due Friday at 9:00am.
7th Grade: Don’t forget to keep an eye on your lab! The answers for this are due on Monday, March 23rd. Your assignment for Thursday, 3/19 is as follows: You will be completing your HMH Exploration 3 today. This is an Excellent summation of the Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy. Remember: matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed! As organisms, we are Perfect examples of this! This assignment will be due Friday morning at 9:00am.
8th Grade: I will have a Zoom meeting @ 10:00am on Friday, March 20th. The meeting code is: 591-405-089 See you there! I am tasking you with your HMH Exploration 2. This exploration contains an incredibly fun lab on testing the effectiveness of packing materials (you should definitely have most of the materials around the house; Please don’t go to the store! Use what you have! Be creative!). The lab asks that you use a scale… remember, you can hop on the scale, find your weight, and then pick something up and find the difference (your weight - your weight+an item= weight of the item).Personally I would have LOVED to do this during middle school! The good news is that this exploration will be due on Monday, March 23rd. I am giving you two days of class to work on this as it is much more involved than a normal exploration and you may need a little bit of time to gather materials. All I ask is that you do your best on the lab. Challenge yourself. Have fun. Think about the lessons you learned during our “The Sky is Falling” egg-drop lab. Let me know if you have any questions!
I miss you guys,
Mr. L
