Roller Coaster Physics Journal Entry 6 and Completed Journal

Complete and turn in your Journals.

Journal Entry 6: Each member should sketch the final design on your last piece of unlined paper in the journal and label the following points:

  1. The starting position of the marble
  2. The marble at the bottom of the starting elevation
  3. The marble as it is going up the first hill
  4. The marble as it is going down the first hill
  5. The marble as it is upside down in the loop
  6. The marble as it stops at the end of the track

Each member of the company must answer the following feedback questions as their 6th journal entry using complete sentences.

  1. At what point on the track did the marble have the most potential energy?
  2. At what point on the track did the marble have the most kinetic energy?
  3. Is any energy “lost” throughout the ride? Use the Law of Conservation to explain.
  4. What is acceleration and how does it apply to your roller coaster?
  5. What is gravity and how does it apply to your roller coaster?
  6. What is momentum and how does it apply to your roller coaster?
  7. What is velocity and how does it apply to your roller coaster?
  8. How does the starting point of the marble affect the speed of the marble at the end of the track?
  9. What happens to the marble’s kinetic energy as it goes up a hill and slows down?
  10. Would a marble ever be able to get over a hill higher than its original starting height? Explain your answer.
  11. If you were to use a different size marble on your track, how would it affect the results?
  12. What was one thing you did during this activity that you think you will remember six months from now?
  13. How might I change this assignment to make it more fun in the future? (Please do not write “Don’t make us keep a journal!”)

Roller Coaster Physics Journal Entry 1

Roller Coaster Physics Journal:
  1. Design the cover page for your journal. Use a piece of printer paper to begin.  You can make it look however you want so long as you add the following information: your name, the company name, the name of the roller coaster, and artwork relevant to the project.
  2. Using the first blank page in your journal, sketch out a design of a roller coaster using two lengths of track connected with tape and supported by PVC pipe and connectors. This sketch will probably not be your final roller coaster design, but it will serve as a starting point.  Remember, your track must have one loop and three hills, but you may have more than that if you choose.  The more the merrier

Journal Entry 1: In addition to detailing decisions you made today, descriptions of design changes, and your group’s sketch of your roller coaster, tonight learn about Speed and Velocity; write a strong paragraph summarizing these two physics concepts.  (Remember, you may use the back of the first page.)
