Welcome to Sixth Grade

Greetings and welcome to a new school year,

It is good to be in my second year at St. Brendan. Last year was a good experience and I enjoyed meeting kids and families. I look forward to the same this year.

A little bit about myself. I have a background in music and accompany a choir at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and I worked in liturgy at churches in my area for many years. I taught piano privately for several years before going back to school to get my master’s degree in teaching. I subbed in many different schools and classes before and after getting my masters. This time gave me a variety of experience in schools, classrooms, and content areas. I saw many different ways of doing things and organizing a classroom. I was excited to begin working full-time and to use some of what I learned.

My husband and I have lived in our home in the Sky Valley for many years and raised our two children there. We have a grandson who we enjoy caring for when our son and daughter-in-law visit from Idaho. Our daughter is a very successful teacher in ELA and Social Studies. (She and I both got our Masters in Teaching at the same time. Quite an accomplishment!) My husband left nursing after many successful years as a Licensed Practical Nurse working with patients with various types of head injuries or other physical injuries. He also spent several years working with medically fragile students in a special education classroom.

This year I am teaching English Language Arts (ELA) and religion for the middle school grades. This means I will see each group of students twice each day. There is every possibility of cross-over between the two subjects because of writing. Written language applies to everything we do. I also encourage you to have your student reading on a daily basis. Reading aids in understanding writing.

I use the 6-Trait Writing model to evaluate essays and written assignments. This is a model I learned while serving on a writing scoring team for many years in my district. We would train on sample essays and then score several hundred essays as two-person teams. The then-current curriculum director once said that our scoring calibrated with that of the WASL assessment that was being used by the State of Washington and OSPI. This was a wonderful reinforcement of our work.

I enjoy teaching immensely and working with children and families. I view teaching/education as a three-way partnership between you, your child, and myself. Please feel free to contact me with questions at any time. I work to return messages as soon as possible–the goal is within 24 hours.

I look forward to another good year working with you and your children at St. Brendan! Thank you for allowing me to help your children learn.

Mrs. Wenzl

Thank you so much to everyone for all the pampering during teacher appreciation week. Little elves were stealthy at delivering things like a bag full of chocolate and Doritos and a gift lotion set.  I feel appreciated every day, but last week was very special.

We will have our final MAP testing session of the school year on Monday afternoon. Please do your best to ensure your sixth grader has a good night’s rest and a nutritious breakfast and lunch on Monday.

Our religion time will be spent finishing up our review of the Sacraments and beginning a look at the Luminous Mysteries. The displays created for each category of Sacraments should be hanging in the hallway outside the classroom by the end of the week. Look for a project sheet on the Luminous Mysteries to be posted to the homework page by the end of the week.

In literature class we will finish reading the script for The Phantom Tollbooth this week. Students should be prepared for end of the unit activities and projects next week, as well as a test. Be sure to check your student’s assignment book or the homework page of the website for dates and more specific information as the week progresses.

Language classes will focus on closing out the unit on modifiers.  There are two new lessons this week before an in-depth review of he unit will begin late in the week. Look for a unit test date to be announced by the end of the week. Students should also expect the regular weekly vocabulary quiz and assignment this week.

Please join the school celebration of the Feast of Saint Brendan on Wednesday morning at 8:30am if you can!

May 7, 2018

This week in religion class we will be reviewing the Sacraments. Students will be creating visual displays for each of the three categories of Sacraments during this review. The goal will be for students to complete their displays for the Sacraments of Initiation and begin the ones for the Sacraments of Healing this week.

Our literature and language time will be interrupted with the final round of MAP testing for the school year on Monday and Wednesday. Please do what you can to ensure that your sixth grader has had a good night’s sleep and access to a nutritious lunch on Monday and Wednesday. With the remaining ELA time, we will work on a project based on the Dodecahedron from The Phantom Tollbooth.

April 30, 2018

It is hard to believe it will already be May this week! I know students are beginning to look forward to summer and as such are having a harder time focusing on their work. Please continue to discuss the importance of finishing the year with strong academics and good behavior at home. We will certainly continue these conversations at school.

Our religion focus this week will be to review for and take the chapter 8 test. Look for the review PowerPoint presentation to be posted to the homework page on Monday afternoon. The test will be on Wednesday. We will have a short lesson on the Sacrament of Eucharist late in the week in solidarity with the second graders who will receive their first Holy Communion on Saturday. In addition, we hope to see you at Mass on Friday for the May crowning of Mary and then for the Grandparents and Special Friends celebration.

In literature, students will begin the week with an open book, open note quiz on the first act of The Phantom Tollbooth. We will then take some time to preview the second act and make predictions about what to expect based on character names. We will begin reading the first scene in the second act later in the week.

Our language classes will focus on the first seven lessons in the modifier unit. After a lesson on comparing with adverbs, students will have  review worksheet on these lessons with a quiz scheduled for Thursday. Students should be well prepared for the modifier unit test by the middle of May.

Important Dates:

  • Wednesday – Religion Chapter 8 Test
  • Thursday – Modifier Quiz #2
  • Friday – Mass with May Crowning 8:30 am
  • Friday – Grandparents and Special Friends Day
  • Friday – 12:45 Dismissal
  • Saturday – First Communion for 2nd Graders

April 23, 2018

We have a busy week ahead, with mid-trimester reports going home at the end of the week. Please take a moment to check PowerSchool to see if there are any missing assignments that can still be turned in. Enjoy the beautiful weather that has been forecasted, but don’t forget to check the homework page each weekday evening for a peek at what has been assigned.

In religion we will begin looking at chapter 8, “Our Journey and God’s Presence.” This week students will learn about the Israelites finally entering the Promised Land after Moses’ death and reflect on the story of Mary’s appearance to Juan Diego.  We will also talk about different types of prayer, highlighting prayers of petition and blessings.

In language class we will take the first modifier quiz on Monday. Lessons for the remainder of the week will focus on proper adjectives and adverbs. Look for a second modifier quiz to be scheduled for next week.  This week’s vocabulary assignment and quiz will be on the last half of the words in unit 8.

We will finish reading the first act of The Phantom Tollbooth in literature this week, with a quiz tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 30. We will also spend time reviewing the vocabulary for this selection and take a quiz on these words on Thursday.

April 16, 2018

We are nearing the second half of the final trimester of sixth grade! Please take a moment to click over to PowerSchool to see if your student has any missing assignments, and make a plan with him or her to get these in before mid-trimester reports are sent home on April 27. Don’t forget that assignments that are preparation for an assessment cannot be accepted after the assessment has been given.

In religion we will finish our study of the Ten Commandments this week, with the chapter seven test scheduled for Thursday. Look for the PowerPoint review of the material in this chapter to be posted to the homework page on Tuesday afternoon.  All students are encouraged to re-read chapter seven this week and take notes during our in class review sessions.

Our language focus will shift away from writing to a study of adjectives with week. Look for a review of the first several adjective lessons to come home on Thursday with a quiz on those lessons to be scheduled for early next week.  There will also be a regular weekly vocabulary assignment and quiz this week, on first ten words in unit 8 in the workbook. King You stories will not have any additional class time, but are due any day this week.

Students will continue reading the two act play based on The Phantom Tollbooth this week in literature class. There will be response questions to answer as we begin digging into the character of Milo. Students will begin creating a map of the Lands Beyond this week and should be preparing for a quiz on the vocabulary in this play that will be given sometime next week.

April 9, 2018

Happy Easter and welcome back! I hope you had a relaxing break from the school routine, and are ready for the final stretch of the school year.  I hope to get the students back into the rhythm of the school routine quickly so that they can finish up their King You stories and get to meaningful depths in our new units this week.

Our new chapter in religion focuses on the Ten Commandments.  Chapter seven is titled “Commandment and Fulfillment.” Students will read the Old Testament story where God gives the Ten Commandments to Moses as well as stories about Jesus’s teachings on the laws of his time. If all goes according to plan, there will be a test on this chapter in the middle of next week.

In literature we will prepare to read the play based on the novel The Phantom Tollbooth. The play is in two acts and is in the literature book. We will begin the unit by talking about storytelling and script writing, and move onto getting familiar with vocabulary that is key to comprehending the story as well as the concept of figurative language, which heavily influences the events in this story.  We may or may not begin actually reading the play this week.

Our main language focus this week will be finalizing King You stories. Students will be given a little class time to work on their revisions, but I hope to also find time to begin lessons on adjectives this week. In addition, students should expect their regular vocabulary assignment and assessment out of their workbook this week.

March 26, 2018

As is typical in the week before any break, this is going to be a busy week.  We will begin the Triduum at the end of the week, and spend time in the church remembering the events of Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Please join us if you are able. Teachers are wrapping up units in several classes, and students will have a test every day this week, Monday through Thursday. Based on that information, I made the decision to suspend the regular vocabulary assignment and quiz this week, but students should be prepared for the second half of the seventh unit to be picked up on the other side of the break. Scroll to the bottom of this week’s newsletter for a look at the many activities and assessments planned for this week.

Our religion classes at the beginning of the week will be spent wrapping up chapter six on Passover and The Eucharist, with the test scheduled for Wednesday. At the end of the week will participate in celebrating and remembering these same traditions. Please join us if you can!

Literature  classes will be geared toward wrapping up our unit on The Westing Game. On Tuesday we will watch the 1997 movie Get A Clue, based loosely on the book. Students will take the final book test on Thursday.

In Language class we will finally get to the verb review mentioned in last week’s newsletter. We will table revisions to the King You stories until after spring break.

Important Dates:

  • Monday – Music Test on Composer of the Month
  • Tuesday – History Test
  • Wednesday – Religion Chapter 6 Test
  • Thursday – Holy Thursday Prayer Service, 8:45am in church
  • Thursday – The Westing Game Final Test
  • Friday – Stations of the Cross 9:00am in church
  • Friday – Noon Dismissal; Exit building in silence!

March 19, 2018

We get a full week of academics this week before Holy Week begins. Some students seem to be counting down the days to Easter Break, but break is still two full weeks away, and we have a lot of material to cover between now and then!

Religion classes will focus on Passover and Eucharist, and the similarities and differences between these two traditions. Students will also spend a little time learning about Pope Benedict and researching Pope Francis and how the Church continues ancient traditions today. Students should be prepared for a test on the material in chapter early six next week.

In literature class we will make a push to see if we can finish reading The Westing Game this week so we can move into end of the unit activities and wrap up next week. To that end, students will have assigned chapters for reading each evening this week.

We will finally have our peer review of King You drafts this week in language class. Students will then have the rest of the week to work on revising their stories based on the peer review, with second drafts due any day this week.  We will also spend time this week reviewing the verb unit in the grammar book.

March 12, 2018

This weekend was full of sunshine! I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the blue skies and are adjusting to the the loss of one hour over the weekend. Don’t forget that this is a short week for students; there is no school on Friday so teachers can participate in the regional curriculum day.

In religion class we will begin looking at chapter 6, “Passover and the Eucharist.” We will take some time to review the liturgical seasons at the beginning of the year to show the connection Passover and the Last Supper have the current time of year.

Our literature classes will focus on reviewing chapters 9 through 15 in The Westing Game in preparation for Wednesday’s quiz. We will also take a little time out of this class on Thursday to discuss the school’s emergency procedures and practice an evacuation drill.

Language class will be focused on the first set of revisions for students’ King You stories. They will participate in a peer review process and be held accountable for using their peer’s suggestions or explaining, in writing, why not.

Important Dates:

  • Tuesday – Science Test
  • Wednesday – The Westing Game quiz chapters 9-15
  • Thursday – Vocabulary Quiz
  • Thursday – Classroom Evacuation Drill
  • Thursday – Report Cards sent home
  • Friday – No School

March 5, 2018

I hope you had as much fun this weekend as I did! My family spent Saturday at Comicon, our annual tradition. I also spent time updating PowerSchool, please take a moment to check your student’s missing assignments, as they will not be accepted past Wednesday because the second trimester ends on Friday.

In religion class this week we will review chapter five, “Slavery and Deliverance.” There will be an in class review on Tuesday, study time on Wednesday, and the test will be on Thursday.

Our literature time will continue to be spent reading The Westing Game.  We have the potential to read several chapters this week if students make effective use of their work time. There will be additional vocabulary words to look up and lots of practice writing proper paragraphs as students respond to what they are reading. Look for another quiz early next week.

Language class will focus on writing historical fiction narratives. Students are required to get approval on their plot diagrams prior to beginning drafting. Students should be ready for a peer edit by the end of the week, and hopefully to receive feedback  from me before the beginning of next week.

February 26, 2018

I hope you had a restful weekend and are ready for the week ahead. Hopefully we’ll have a full five days of school this week! The end of the trimester is very close.  Please keep on eye on assignments that come home and work with your sixth grader to ensure timely completion.  Late assignments will not be accepted after Wednesday, March 7 in order to give me time to score and enter grades into PowerSchool before report cards are printed.

We will discuss the material in chapter 5 of the religion books this week. This chapter is titled “Slavery and Deliverance” and will ask students to think about what might be getting in the way of experiencing authentic freedom.  The biblical passages we will look at are the story of Exodus and when Jesus is asked questions about everlasting life.  I am hoping to test students on this chapter early next week.

In reading, we will review chapters 5-8 in preparation for a quiz on these chapters on Wednesday.  Students will also receive a new set of vocabulary words from these chapters to put on their vocabulary chart and will be asked to continue filling in their character chart and suspect lists.

Students should expect to have their regular weekly vocabulary assignment in English again this week, with a quiz scheduled for Friday.  We will spend the rest of the week preparing to write a historical fiction narrative about King You, and emperor of the Zheng Dynasty. We will discuss the elements of a narrative and students will be given time to research the folklore surrounding King You before filling in a plot diagram.  A complete plot diagram will be required before students will be allowed to begin drafting their stories.

Important Dates:

  • Friday – Non-Uniform/12:45 Dismissal
  • Friday – Mass 8:30am
  • Friday – Vocab quiz, pages 63-64 #11-20
  • Tuesday, March 6 – Possible religion test, chapter 5
  • Wednesday, March 7 – Last day to turn in missing/late assignments
  • Friday, March 9 – End of second trimester

February 21, 2018

Welcome back! I hope you had an enjoyable mid-winter break. I was lucky enough to spend Saturday morning at St. James Cathedral for the Rite of Enrollment. My foster daughter will be eligible to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter! (Whether or not she receives them at that time will depend on whether or not her adoption into our family is finalized prior to Easter.) It is an exciting time in our household.

During this short week, sixth graders will finalize their Joseph comic strips in religion, which will be due on Friday. We will also have a Lenten lesson on the Dignity of the Human Person, focusing on the story of a boy from Iraq.  Please join the school for Mass on Friday morning if you can!

Our English focus will be on subjects and predicates. Students will move from finding complete subjects and predicates through simple subjects and predicates to compound subjects and predicates. If time allows, they will begin looking for subjects in inverted sentences, where the subject comes at the end of the sentence.

In reading we will continue reading The  Westing Game, with the goal of finishing chapter 8 by Monday. The suspect list will be due for a first check on Thursday or Friday, and there will be a vocabulary quiz on the nine vocabulary words identified last week on Friday.

Important Dates:

  • Monday – No School
  • Tuesday – No School
  • Friday – Mass at 9:30am
  • Friday – Vocabulary Quiz (words from The Westing Game)

February 12,2018

Happy Monday! Mrs. White and Mrs. Conrow will team up this week to ensure a smooth transition to Mrs. Conrow taking over the classroom while Mrs. Wenzl continues her recovery.

Sixth graders have a comic strip retell of the story titled “Joseph, The Loyal Son” in their religion book to work on this week and vocabulary from the first four chapters in The Westing Game to complete.  There will not be a new vocabulary list or test from the vocabulary workbook this week or next due to the short weeks and in order to allow Mrs. Conrow time to become familiar with this routine.

Even though it is a short week, it is a busy one. Please take note of the important dates below:

  • Tuesday – The Power of One Assembly 8:30am
  • Tuesday – Valentine’s Day Party in the afternoon
  • Wednesday – Ash Wednesday, Mass at 9:00am
  • Friday – No School, start of mid-winter break

January 8, 2018

Good evening,

Welcome back to school!  We are back in the swing of things and getting back into routines.

All the data is in and 6th grade had the most pages read during the Christmas Break with 19,478 pages.  Wow!!!  There will be a simple hot cider treat tomorrow, January 9 after lunch and recess.  The 8th and 7th grades had 9100+ and 1900+ respectively.  Great job and lots of reading!

There was a blessing of the school and classrooms today by Father Wichert.  Each classroom will be inscribed with “20+C+M+B+18” for this new year.  This is the blessing of the chalk that was done last week at the Friday Mass.

We are beginning the work to do a short compare/contrast paper on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.  We are beginning with understanding compare/contrast language and working together to write out some of the information that will be the basis of the written part.  They are doing a great job thus far.

1/9/2018

We had our celebration for reading during Christmas break.  Thank you, Mrs. Severs and Mrs. D’Ambrosia for helping out.  The kids enjoyed the opportunity to bask in their accomplishment and to just talk with each other.  Congratulations, 6th grade, for a job well done!

1/11/2018

I want to make sure you are aware that I will be out of the classroom tomorrow to attend a conference down in the Bellevue area.  Plans are all set up and the room is in order.  The classes know that I will be gone and a guest teacher will be here in my stead.  They also know that I expect them to do their best and to follow all the usual routines and expectations.   I am sure they will do well.

As you all know, there is a funeral for Deacon Jose tomorrow afternoon and school will be dismissed at 2 PM.  Parking will be full for this funeral if you plan to attend.

Have a great evening.

Mrs. Wenzl
