Welcome to Sixth Grade!
It’s been great to be welcomed into the St. Brendan’s community. I enjoyed meeting students and many of the parents today.
This year, the students will be adjusting to traveling to each class, as well as the increased workload of middle school. Each student wrote their own goals and motivations to prepare for these new responsibilities. Discuss these, and help your child put them into action this year.
I’ll let you know about my past teaching experience. This will be my 6th year teaching 6th grade. I previously taught 6th grade Reading and 8th Grade Literature at a private bilingual school in Tapei, Taiwan. Both of those classes included vocabulary and writing. My previous school taught me how to adjust to the needs of the students by constantly assessing their progress. I’ve enjoyed teaching 6th grade so I’m happy to be teaching it here at St. Brendan’s.
One aspect of the curriculum that is new is the writing curriculum. We are using a program created by the Teachers’ College at Columbia University. The students will write personal narratives, literary essays, and informational essays. This is a challenging yet effective program.
I will also be teaching Religion, which is a subject I haven’t taught before. I was raised in, and once again attend Holy Family in Kirkland. One of my goals will be to bring the Bible into Literature class, and use writing skills in Religion class.
I feel very blessed to be here at St. Brendan’s. Thank you so much for giving me the privilege of teaching your children this year.
