Our standardized test results demonstrate our students’ strong academic performance.

Our testing schedule from kindergarten to grade eight assures that every student has test data to document academic growth as he/she progresses through our school.

Student assessments include:

  • Assessment of Catechesis Religious Education (ACRE) – grades five and eight
  • IOWA standardized test-grades three through eight
  • Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) – grades one through six

 

2014 IOWA Test Results

The IOWA test assessed our students based on the most current Washington State Standards. Our students did well on this updated test! The scores shown below are percentiles with the 50th percentile being the national average. For example, a percentile score of 75 indicates that our class performed better than 75% of all other classes who took the same test. Our students are strong with their writing and reading skills. The state standards moved some math concepts to different grades and we are adjusting and teaching math based on the standards. We were aware there were questions on the IOWA math sections that our students had not yet mastered. For example, 5th grade students are to know all facets of decimals and fractions and they are making progress. We will teach more geometry in all grades. In our 2015 accreditation report, we will analyze our math curriculum, teaching practices, and various student test results. The end result will be a plan to ensure students know their math skills based on the state standards.

The national percentile ranking scores shown below indicate the percentage of students who scored higher than the norm or reference student group. For example, a class scoring at the 80th percentile performed better than 80% of the students in the norm group. The 50th percentile ranking represents the ‘national average.’ Class percentile ranking scores give us a broad overview of the class.

Grade-equivalent scores are one way to show the growth of our students and as a whole class. The following table shows the class growth from 2012 to 2013 in subject area. Each of our classes had growth from nine months to two years and two months and each class performed above grade level in every subject.

2012 ITBS Student Test Results

Grade equivalent scores are one way to show the growth of our students as well as whole classes. A grade equivalent score is given in terms of grade and month. Each of our 2012 classes made a year’s growth or more from last year and performed above grade level in each subject except 5th grade math which showed .8 growth instead of 1.0. Very good results!

The grade equivalent scores in the first table compare the same classes from last year to this year. For example, reading across the table, we can see that this year’s 3rd grade class (2012 Reading) had a reading score of 4.7 (fourth grade, seventh month). When they were in 2nd grade, (2011 Reading) the class had a reading score of 3.2 (third grade, second month). This means that as a class, they had a growth of 1.5 (one year, five months). This is more than a year’s growth.

The second table compares our students’ performance to students in the Seattle Archdiocese. There were over 6,000 students in the Seattle Archdiocese who took the ITBS tests. Our students scored higher or the same as those students in most of the subjects. Well done!

Grade equivalent scores can show at what grade level a child or class was functioning using grade level materials. For example, if a 5th grade student scored a 7.0 grade equivalent score in reading comprehension, the score of 7.0 would represent the beginning of seventh grade. This does not mean that the student was functioning at the 7th grade level since he/she was not tested with seventh grade material. The student was only tested with fifth grade material and performed well at that level.
In 2008, our 5th and 8th grade students took the Assessment of Catechesis Religious Education (ACRE) for the first time. For the last three years, both grades scored better than 86% of all other students taking this test. Approximately 55% of our students in both grades scored in the highest category (Advanced) and 44% scored in the second highest category (Proficient). Out of 112 of our students assessed, only three students (1%) scored in the lowest category (Needs Improvement). In all areas of the ACRE test, our students scored higher than the national percentile reflecting our strong religious instruction and student learning about their faith.

2011 ITBS Test Results

Students in grades 2 through 6 took the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) in October. We are proud of our students’ achievement.

  • The ITBS test is one indication about how our students are performing. It is a standardized test which compares our students to other grade-level students and gives us detailed information on each child’s basic skill levels.
  • The test results indicate what learning a student retained from the previous grade and six weeks in the current grade.
  • The national percentile ranking scores shown below compared our students to other students across the nation.
  • A percentile scores indicates the percentage of students who scored higher than the norm or reference group. For example, a student or class scoring at the 80th percentile performed better than 80% of the students in the norm group.
  • The 50th percentile ranking represents the “national average” at the time the test was normed.
  • Class percentile ranking scores give us a broad overview of the class.
  • We analyze, sort, rank, and filter individual student scores to determine the progress each student has made and where we can improve with teaching, materials, and reinforcement. Teachers use this data to adjust their teaching and assignments to support the needs of all students.

Grade-equivalent scores attempt to show at what grade level and month a child or class is functioning. For example, if a 5th grade student scored a 7.3 grade equivalent in reading comprehension, the score of 7.3 would represent the seventh grade, third month, which is December. It is not true though that this student is functioning at the seventh grade level since he/she was never tested on seventh grade material. The student was only tested on fifth grade material.

The scores below are class grade equivalent scores and compare same classes from one year to the next. A grade equivalent score shows where the class performed in terms of grade and month. For example, 2nd grade students are at grade level with a score of 2.2 (second grade second month) when they take the test in October.

Our 2009 Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) scores are shown below. The percentages indicate the percentage of students who met state standards. Students did not take the assessment in 2010 due to the revisions by the state. Students in grades 7 and 8 will resume taking the state test in May 2011.

DIBELS 2009

Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment is given to students in grades 1st through 6th three times a year. This is an assessment for reading fluency and comprehension. The test data provides information on a student’s reading strength and areas for improvement, how the student is progressing, and if the student is reading at grade level.

All Kindergarten students are administered the Scholastic Readiness Test each spring. This information helps us determine their readiness for first grade. Over the past two years, all students fell in the two highest categories (Readiness and above). In 2009, we saw an increase in students who scored at the highest (R++) level. This can be attributed to both a new challenging reading curriculum and extended instructional time with a full-day kindergarten.
